Covid-19 Control Measures taken by the UK Government

Coronavirus has been wreaking havoc in almost every country in the world. The severe impact of this pandemic can be seen in Europe where the number of Covid-19 patients is rising every day. Governments all around the world are trying various strategies to curb the spread of this disease. The UK has been severely hit by this pandemic where the total number of active cases is more than 200k. To protect its citizens from this deadly virus, the UK government has introduced certain control measures.

Under the control measures implemented by the UK government, certain powers have been given to the Police department over individuals and businesses to mitigate the risk associated with the spreading of COVID-19.

Health protection regulation 2020:

These regulations are inclusive of rules about the restriction of movement and closing of businesses as announced by the Prime Minister. However, these restrictions are applicable only in the emergency period. As per the regulations, some of the non-essential businesses like cinemas, museums, and theatres have been closed for a limited period. Pubs, cafes, and restaurants have been asked to limit their business activity only to takeaway services. If a person is found to be violating these rules then the police have the power to issue a prohibition notice requiring compliance.

A person is only allowed to leave his/her home if there is any reasonable excuse like purchasing necessities and seeking medical assistance. Certain essential workers like the ones belonging to the health care and social care are exempted from this regulation. If a police officer finds anyone outside his/her house without any valid reason then he/she may direct the person to their house using force if needed.

Gathering of people is prohibited in a public place unless it is for a funeral. If any unnecessary gathering is observed then a police officer may ask them to go back to their house with reasonable force if needed.

Coronavirus Act 2020

Power of sending a person to a place for assessment and screening
A police personnel has the power to send a person to a place appropriate for both screening and assessment of the health condition like the Coronavirus Testing Centre. To exercise these power, the police must have a valid reason for suspecting a person to be infectious.

  • Power to detain a person at a place for screening and assessment
The police can detain a person to a place for at least 24 hours for screening and testing.

  • Quarantine enforcement
If a person is a confirmed case of COVID-19 or even if any such results are awaited for a person then quarantine may be imposed by a public health officer for 14 days which can be further extended based on the circumstances. If a COVID-19 patient absconds then the police may take that person into custody and return him to the quarantined place.

At this time of coronavirus pandemic, we request everyone to help the police and the country to help beat the coronavirus.
